Ben, ILO, and Arc of DC Work Toward Employment Goals – and Succeed!
The Arc of DC, Integrated Living Opportunities, and Harmony Healthcare Providing Opportunities for Ben
During COVID, Ben searched for new employment for over one year before being referred to The Arc of DC’s employment program from one of our community partners, Integrated Living Opportunities. Our employment program provides job development and placement services, leading clients through the job search process from resume preparation to on-the-job support. Phil Lartigue, our Employment Services Manager, began working with Ben regularly through virtual meetings and occasional in-person meetings. Phil helped Ben with his resume and employment goals, so Ben could find work again.
Despite Ben’s experience and certifications in the medical coding field, finding similar work during COVID was difficult. With Phil’s assistance, Ben applied to several positions and received a few interviews with no firm offers. Phil focused on learning more about medical coding, so he could better advocate for Ben and his abilities. Phil and Ben were then able to tailor his resume to truly highlight Ben’s accomplishments and capabilities. After applying to more positions, Ben received additional interviews but still did not have any offers. Phil then helped Ben update online versions of his resume through LinkedIn and Indeed, better showcasing how Ben’s experience made him a strong candidate. To increase connections in the medical coding field, Phil joined a Facebook group for medical coders. Through these social media interactions, Phil found several opportunities for Ben. Phil reached out directly to hiring firms to tell Ben’s story and emphasize his desire to do the work. Several firms responded, and Ben received multiple interviews. One firm stood out, seeing Benj’s potential and outstanding qualifications: Harmony Solutions. Eileen Salinger, a recruiter with Harmony Solutions, began emailing with Phil and decided to interview Ben, ultimately hiring him.
Ben’s mother, Andrea, appreciates The Arc of DC’s unique approach to employment, sharing “Phil did not see this as a one job fits all type thing.” We work with our clients to find jobs in the industry of their choosing through our close connections with community partners, dedicated employment staff, and a comprehensive plan of action. Ben’s story is a prime example of how qualified people are often only identified by their disability. When given an opportunity like everyone else, our clients prove over and over again that they can contribute and succeed in the workforce.
